Eye Care Center Assists Young Russian Woman
Olga had been diagnosed with a severe form of juvenile diabetes at 6 years old. Through her youth she received monitored insulin and was frequently hospitalized. Due to the diabetes, Olga completely lost eyesight in her right eye, and began losing sight in her left eye. She was classified as handicapped and lived with her grandmother who later suffered a stroke. Olga and her grandmother moved into a small apartment with Olga's parents who received a combined income of $53 a month in American money. At the age of 17, Olga's diabetes was out of control, resulting in severe complications, including hallucinations. Her symptoms were misdiagnosed by a Russian doctor and mistaken for a mental illness. When Olga began to lose hope, she soon learned "with God all things are possible." Burl Newport, a member of a Chattanooga church, met Olga in a Russian hospital. Mr. Newport inspired several other members of his church, and Olga's dream came true. She was brought to America and received medical, dental, and eye care. Arrangements were made for Olga to receive treatment from Dr. Collier at the Eye Care Center. Her left eye was treated by the Argon laser, which kills the diseased retinal tissue in the eye and allows regular blood flow to the healthy tissue. Olga is very grateful to the Eye Care Center for their special work in restoring her eyesight. We at the Eye Care Center are very pleased to be of help to this young lady and wish her well. The effect of Olga's juvenile diabetes on her eyesight should remind all diabetics of the importance of annual eye exams. This is particularly true for juvenile diabetes because they can have advanced changes even with relatively good vision.
