Refractive
Surgery
Presently
myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism can be permanently corrected
with the excimer laser. The FDA in 1998 approved the excimer laser for
hyperopia (far-sightedness). This technique works on the
front surface of the cornea, to either flatter it for myopia, steepen it for hyperopia, or round
it up like a basketball for
astigmatism correction. Essentially most refractive errors can
either be lessened greatly or completely eliminated to gain more
independence from glasses or contact lenses.
The laser can be applied to the eye directly,
known as Laser Existed Epithelic Keratectomy (LASEK) or under a hinged
flap known as laser assisted in-situ keratameilusis (LASIK or
flap and zap). Both of these procedures are done as an out-patient
in the complete laser surgery room at the Eye Care Center office
in Tullahoma. Since the excimer ultraviolet laser was approved
in 1995, Dr. Norris has done several of these
procedures to provide patients with a more independent, active
lifestyle without glasses or contact lenses. Any level of nearsightedness
and astigmatism can be corrected this way without having to go
to Nashville or Murfreesboro for the treatment.
Conductive Keratoplasty (CK)
For the first time, doctors can treat
farsightedness (hyperopia) and presbyopia without a laser or
scalpel. A new noninvasive technique called Conductive
Keratoplasty (CK) can correct patients' vision quickly, safely and
effectively. Unlike LASIK, PRK and other refractive vision
correction techniques which cut and remove tissue, CK uses
radiofrequency energy to gently reshape the eye.
CustomVue
CustomVue works with WaveScan, the same
technology that reduces distortions in high-powered telescopes when
viewing objects in space. With WaveScan, the doctor can
identify and measure individual imperfections in your eye 25 times
more accurately that with other methods.

Laser
Eye Surgery
Any eye
condition treatable with a laser can now be completely cared for in
the Tullahoma Eye Care Center laser surgery center. We have access
to five different lasers.
This includes the 1) excimer ultraviolet
laser for laser vision correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness,
and astigmatism. Otherwise known as LASIK (flap and zap) Another new laser the 2)
carbon dioxide ultrapulse laser can lift away facial wrinkles
and remove excess lid skin. The third laser is a portable 3)
visiting laser used for wet macular degeneration. The last two lasers are the old stand-bys of ophthalmology,
including the 4) argon blue-green and 5) infrared yag lasers.
Argon blue green has applications in a multitude of eye problems
including diabetic retinopathy, macular leakages and glaucoma.
Infrared yag is used for both after-cataracts and a variant of
glaucoma that has narrow angles.
The Tullahoma Eye Care Center laser surgery
center avoids costly hospitalization and provides the convenience
of not having to leave town for expert laser treatments that
are all approved by the FDA. Observation of laser surgery is
additionally possible to help comfort patients and family members.

measures, please contact the Eye Care Center at 1-800-870-5473

No-Stitch
Cataract Surgery
How does
no stitch, no needle, no patch, and no bleeding sound for cataract
surgery? You might ask does it hurt or how does the ophthalmologist
anesthetize the eye? We just use numbing drops and the same solution
inside the eye. There will be some IV sedation as needed also.
The surgery can be done through your local hospital or surgery
center in Tullahoma, Shelbyville, Fayetteville or
Winchester. With the Eye Care Center we still accept insurance
or Medicare with supplement payment, but you might need a referral
from your eye doctor or physician. We are quite proud of our
working relationship with optometrists and would manage your
case in concert with them.
Before we put the cart before the horse,
a cataract is a clouding of the naturally-occurring lens that
typically can interfere with night driving early on in the process
of progression. Cataracts don't necessarily affect only older
folks, but in cases of trauma, use of predisone medication, multiple
medical problems, and family history, there can be cataracts
at an early age.
We typically try conservative treatment
such as a change in glasses to improve the vision first. If glasses
haven't improved the vision, then surgery may be necessary. At
the time of surgery, the cataract is replaced by a man-made plastic
lens that typically is foldable to keep the wound small. Any
astigmatism is usually also reduced with the placement of the
wound. This usually allows for vision after surgery that is more
independent of glasses. Also, ophthalmologist, Dr. Norris, at
the Eye Care Center has implanted several of the Array Bifocal
Implants at the time of cataract surgery to allow patients to see
both up close and far away out of each eye. Other bifocal
implants will be released soon. Also the new Alcon Infinity
Cataract removal system will allow surgeons to remove cataracts in
three different modes.
